Residing in the New Orleans Metro we get the benefits of living in one of the world’s most culturally interesting and exciting places but we could also use a little piece of mind when it comes to the inevitable hurricane season. Fortunately, certain programs and methods are available that can strengthen our homes and potentially lower our insurance expenses over time.
Fortified Roof is a Program through the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. It is a voluntary construction and re-roofing program designed to strengthen homes and commercial buildings against severe weather such as high winds, hail, hurricanes, and even tornadoes. There are a few tiers of systems but some components include improving the sheathing attachment with ring shank nails, providing a sealed roof deck, and proper installation of approved attic ventilations systems.
These measures give you some peace of mind and can provide annual cost saving through insurance premium reductions.
- If you are building a new home, ask your contractor about the fortified roof requirements. These upgrades may be a cost-effective option when factoring in reduced insurance rates over the years.
- If your current roof is aging it may be a good idea to consider this program when replacing your roof. The state is even offering grant programs through the Louisiana Department of Insurance to upgrade your roof.
- Grant Programs through the LA Dept. of Insurance
