How to Maintain Your Tankless Water Heater

When buyer’s hear that a home has a tankless water heater there is a sense of excitement! No waiting for a hot shower, sure that sounds dreamy! But some owners do not know how to properly maintain a tankless water heater. Maintaining a tankless water heater is key to ensuring efficiency, longevity, and reliable hot water. Here are the top tips to keep it in top shape:

1- Descale (Flush)Annually: Mineral build up occurs, especially if you have hard water. This can reduce efficiency and damage the unit. If you have hard water consider descaling or flushing every 6 months.

How to: Use a descaling kit or vinegar and a submersible pump to circulate the solution through the unit for 45–60 minutes.

2- Clean the In-Line Water Filter: The filter traps sediment and debris, which can clog the unit or reduce water flow.

How to: Shut off the water, remove the filter (usually located on the cold-water inlet), and rinse it under running water.

3- Inspect the Venting System: Proper venting ensures safe and efficient operation.

How to: Look for blockages, corrosion, or loose connection in the vent pipes. Make sure nothing is obstructing the exhaust outlet.

4- Wipe Down the Exterior: Dust and debris can build up, especially in utility rooms or garages.

How to: Gently wipe the outside with soft cloth. Don’t block the air intake vents.

5- Check the Burner and Flame: A clear, blue flames means proper combustion.

How to: Some models have a viewing window. If the flame is yellow or orange, it may need professional cleaning or adjustment.

6- Have it Professionally Serviced Every 2-3 years: A technician can test the sensors, valves and the head exchange for hidden issues. This is very important for gas-powered units to ensure safe combustion.

7- Use a water Softener if you have hard water: In our area we have hard water, so definitely listen to this one! Hard water causes scale buildup faster. BONUS: This helps prolong the life of not just your heater, but all plumbing appliances.

8- Follow the Manufacturer’s Maintenance Schedule: Each model may have unique components or care needs. Keep the manual handy or look it up online for specifics.
